They have taken the data from Follow The Money (http://followthemoney.org) a nonpartisan organization dedicated to the documentation and research on campaign financing at the state level. For now they have used only data about Governors elected last round and the top 100 donors who donated to more than one candidate or big donors. Nice applet!
